I have been trying to photograph this bird, but he has stayed at the edge of the underbrush. A couple days ago he finally came up into the yard. Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Dave i think you have missed to write Shutter speed and with 1DMII you could have easily gone up to 400 iso and freeze him down perfectly as what i feel here is you must have low shutter compare to your focal and the light condition to shoot this bird.

Am not expert to critique on technical things in much depth. may one of leader (GURU's) will sure give you hints about combination of aperture, speed and ISO

Always a cool bird to photograph. Very nervous bird too!

    Nice capture!

Yes, ISO 100 is always a risky proposition when photographing birds. My default setting is 400 to give me more shutter speed to better freeze subject movement blur. It doesn't seem to be a problem here, but better safe than sorry :). Nice individual, neat pose - shows the nervous nature Eric mentions. As for depth, a lower angle of capture would have thrown the BG into a more appealing smooth backdrop...although in the grass you would have been sure to get some OOF FG stuff getting in the way too. Compromises are always bound to happen! As is I wouldn't mind more room above and right.

I would love to have seen this larger. All good comments above. It looks like an old Kodachrome 64 image so I guess that I am suggesting a bit more saturation. But I do like the look.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. They are greatly appreciated. I am going to try shooting birds at the higher ISO setting that everyone recommended.
