    Default Big Salmon/Nice Seaweed

This image was created on the recently concluded Bear Boat IPT with the Canon 800mm f/5.6 L IS lens and the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/100 sec. at f/7.1 in Tv Mode.

Should have been 1/160 sec. at f/5.6 in Av mode.... Even the pros screw up sometimes.... A bear with a really big salmon will do that to you :)

I got really lucky here as the image with the best fish pose was the only sharp one. BTW, it's a Pink Salmon.

To see lots more bear images check out BAA Bulletin #338 here.

Very nice comp and subject placement Artie. Background is interesting and showing habitat very well. Full view of Salmon is interesting and like the way water dripping from the fish. Very nice image.

First of all I am very jealous on this picture. In my visit to Alaska bears eat grass and there was no fish :(.
One thing that bothers me is the BG of this photo. My wish is that BG color bring out the bear in the frame.
The second thing is that on my monitor the fish need more contrast.
(Hope that my English is ok to understood my point)

I wish the salmon had some more color to make this image pop. As is, the overall image has a nostalgic, sepia tone look to it. (Maybe I'm one of the few people who can get nostalgic about bears, but what can I say.)

    Head angle.
You being the head angle Meister, what say you about the bear's head angle?
Is head angle as important for bear photos, and for other creatures, as it is for bird photos?
    And if not, why not?
    thanks - Tom

Hi Tom, I say that the head angle here with the bear holding a big salmon is pretty much perfect. What sort of head angle would you prefer instead with this body position?

HA is just as important for bears and mammals and people and other creatures as it is for birds. See the Head Angle Fine Points thread in the EER (Sticky at the top of this page.) The last quiz was a bear and I mean that both literally and figuratively.

For those who have a problem with the color of the bear and the fish and the BKGR here is the out of camera original. I thought that I did rather well. I am a bit confused by those comments so I would appreciate hearing more. Adding contrast to a silvery fish that it right on the edge of over-EXP does not seem like a great plan...

I don't know if the fish is accurately colored or not (I wonder about the blue dorsal fin) but the bear and the background look good to me.

I wonder if the seaweed you're referring to is a type of Sargassum perhaps?

" See the Head Angle Fine Points thread in the EER (Sticky at the top of this page.)"
FWIW, I don't see "EER" at top of this page. In fact the top of this page, the two rows of light brown rectangles "Membership - Home - Forums, etc" does not display correctly for me. My browser is Mozillea Firefox 3.6.

But I did anyway find that thread by finding "Educational Resources-Tutorials and Educational Resources-Head Angle Fine Points", from the "Most Viewed Threads" window. So thanks, did not know it was on going/in progress. Very educational. I like your GIFs, really make the differences pop. On the bear #113 Q and R, and your reply GIF #131. Do you have Q and R reversed? For me Q is the image that tilts toward me. And Q shows tip of left ear that makes the head 3 dimensional.

    Back to this thread/image.
I was thinking I might like more of a head turn towards camera, maybe seeing both eyes. Like your first image in your BAA #338.

    Regards - Tom
ps - I do LOVE your perspective here, right in the water ,eye level with bear. And perfect crop also.

Thanks Peter. I love what you did especially to the fish; what technique did you use?

Artie - love this image and Peter's repost as well. Sorry can't help on the seaweed other than maybe some kind of kelp?

Peter you PP of the image, #12, is great, really makes the bear/fish pop out. Because now the bear/fish is the brightest part of the image.

Our name for the weed that pops when you step on it: popweed. Really! It does not sound very scientific bit it is widely used around here. Great image of brownie and big pink!
