Lovely bird in habitat image, Rob. I especially like the way the shadows show the reason for the streaky plumage. A little more room to the right would be nice. A wider aperture, if available, would have blurred out the BG a bit more. What lens did you use?

    Hey Tony,

Using a 200-400mm Lens + 1/4 TC. Car as a blind, bean bag for support. I had been shooting this bird for several minutes and he was in his stealth mode leaving the area when this was taken. Could have used Veritus and Alien Skin Bokeh softwear to remove or soften background, but preferred to leave bird in habitat for effect.

Did you shoot this around Angel's Camp? I'm heading that way in a month or so, wouldn't mind trying to find the same location. I like the natural background - helps reinforce his cammo and gets to the habits of the bird.

Cal, this shot was taken at Lake St.Martin in Lousiana, but I am after a brother/sister at the Sacramento Refuge SWR about 125 miles north of Angels Camp, CA. The subject resides in the neighborhood of the flight deck, if you get a chance. The bird population should be close to maximum in the middle of October.
