This is a shot I took a while back. It's not my usual thing but I've been trying to stretch my creative legs a bit lately. I think the location has a lot of potential when the autumn colors appear. Shot from my kayak, Canon 40D, iso 500, f/8.0, 1/640. RAW conversion via Bridge, some sharpening and curves adjustment in Photoshop.

    Hi Bob

Lovely tranquil scene here, I would have loved to be in a kayak cruising through this as well. I do find myself looking for a focal point in the large reflection however and there isnt one really (apart from your name...). Good on you for trying something different though...

    regards

Super abstract reflections Bob. Sometimes this works better with softer light. I do these occasionally and often just crop to the water. The image then becomes very abstract because the reflections are not pinned to their sources.

Bob, I do a lot of these water images and there are a couple of things I can suggest...

First, aim for 1-2 trees that are really strong within the group along the edges and put them in one of the ROT's positions so they have a better chance of becoming a focal point.

Also, I find that my vertical frames end up being stronger than most of my horizontal because they help isolate that focal point a little better. Put the coastline at the 1/3 down mark and let the water reflection tell the story.

You're right...this is going to be pretty good for the fall season so hang in there and start looking for where your eye naturally goes and begin some preliminary thinking on just the right framing for when the time comes!

I do like the image as is, though. You do have a darker area on the left and a much brighter area on the right - might try a shadow / highlights adjustment to even those 2 sides out exposure-wise.
