Good friend and three time bear boat participant Monte Brown photographing a Brown Bear (coastal grizzly) with a short lens. Not to worry. The bear is nowhere as close as it seems as the image here was made with the 800 which severely compresses the elements in a photo. That said, it is thrilling to be on the ground amongst these surprisingly gentle giants.

Artie, I am sitting in the Anchorage Airport now after spending a few days at Brooks Falls in Katmai, these giants are gentle and non aggressive...a few bears I got fairly close to (not because I tried though :o), but after moving off the trail, to the falls..they just walked on by giving me hardly a second glance, while they were going to the river to feed on salmon.
Being able to share this with my daughter was priceless. I will be back....
Lovely image...

I grew up with several hunters and hunting magazines with ferocious looking grizzlies about ready to attack often graced our coffee table. After just completing my second trip to British Columbia to photograph bears, I do not know where people got the idea that they are mean and nasty. Such gentle giants, love this image!
