Hi Ian - To my eyes looks like the autofocus might have locked on the far wing - with the head/eye are appearing quite soft.
A little tight all around for my personal tastes - just feels cramped- more room up front for him to fly into .
Like the BG and the warm light.
    Keep em coming ;)

His head does feel a little bit softer - I think Lance is right that it locked in on the wing. Try a little extra sharpening (might try using High Pass Filter - it will sometimes sharpen and bring out detail better than just plain sharpening). Lovely light - nice wing spread; agree that a bit more space would be nice.

Thanks folks. This thread was closed for some reason so I couldn't reply, but Lance reopened it :)

Anyway, as I mentioned in private, this was done in MF as my 7D won't AF with the 400/5.6 + 1.4X TC combination. I felt lucky to get this :) . I'll try your idea, Jules, and go back with the HP filter.

Yes, Ian, manual focus for birds in flight is a challenge, although that's how it was done in the past! Too bad you missed the head because the left wing shows how much detail you have in the image. Love the beautiful soft light here and the pose. The image would have been a stunner with the head in focus. Not sure extra sharpening will work but it might!
