I am going to Aspen next week. 19th-22nd...staying all 4 nights there. Its going to be a family trip with wife and (4 yr. old) son so I will be doing photography mostly from pull-outs and short easy trails. I know Maroon Bells and will definitely drive to Independence Pass. Other than those, if you can recommend any short drives in the area, it will be appreciated. I am not keen on driving too far.
Well, it would be a day trip, but the Kebler pass region near Crested butte is great, may be a little early though. At Maroon Bells, wait for the sun to rise a little and then the water in the lake (usually) calms down to glassy smooth for great reflections. But plan to get there very early, then go earlier to get a spot. You can drive in if you go early enough (check to see if this is still true--It's been a couple of years since I was there). It won't be an experience in isolation; if it is near peak colors, it will be shoulder to shoulder photographers and tripods.
Roger, thx for the tip on Maroon Bells. I called them and they said that, at this time of the year, the shuttle does not run during the week and one is allowed to drive. To avoid crowds, I was planning to avoid the weekend anyways. I will keep Kebler pass in mind and will probably decide based on the colors reports. Thx a lot.
