    Kim:

Nice wing up pose, water droplets and water turbulence, open bill, exposure. I wish the upper mandible didn't blend in quite so well with the background.

    Cheers

Ditto Randy and quite loverly. At least the open bill lets us know where the bill should be; not much to do with the dark water, the black bill, and the proper exposure for the whites. A wing position that showed the full near-underwing would have been a plus.

Black bill on dark BG, always my problem too. I love the action and as always hard to telegraph but being more left on this guy would have brought it to the next level with more of the underwing and better head angle. Thanks for posting.

Quite nice, I like the white on black. When this happens with a dark bill against dark BG I like to paint the outline with a soft brush, low exposure dodge tool - just enough to give it more separation (for this example: 15% hardness, 8% exposure, set to midtones). Very subtle, but makes a difference IMO

Dan, Do you paint the edge of the bill or the water itself? Maybe a blown up example would help. I have done something very similar with black eyes set in black hoods....

Here you go Artie. I just paint the edge of the bill itself, without touching the water. Yes, it is good with dark eyes on dark hoods such as terns and skimmers too. In my example the image at left is the original, and at right with the minor tweak done to it (I left the brush showing to show others the size used).

:) I just opened both the before and after versions in PS for the side-by-side comparision, and opened up the dodge tool as if I were still working on it...sneaky, eh!

Yeah, prettty sneaky. Now that I know what I am looking at, I can see the lighter border. Thanks again.
