I really couldn't figure out how to best crop this image. Any comments/criticisms/suggestions are most welcome.

Hi Maureen - Like the wing position and the visible eye and the shadow on the water. The water reflection on the body is neat.
Couple of things here - generally speaking buts to have more room in front of your subject than behind - so here would crop some from the back and needs a little more room up front for him to fly into.
Also he has flown past you at this point - best to get them before they have flown past you, approaching or level with you works best.

Some of the whites on the tail and neck are blown (No Detail) Black and whites birds are difficult in anything but soft light - could go back to the RAW and see if they can be recovered - or try a linear burn layer - there are details on saving the whites in the educational resources forum.
Looking forward to seeing more :)

Thank you, Lance. Your comments are very helpful. I'll be back out at the beach tomorrow and will hopefully find better light!

Nice Maureen. Agree with Lance, the shadow is a real plus. Also agree that a bit more room in the direction of the bird movement would be useful here. Having said this, the "rule" can be broken and I like to see out of the box crops. The neck feathers do look hot but if you shot RAW you can probably recover them with the Recover slider during the RAW processing.

Thanks John. I'll give it a try.
