These were taken yesterday along the Montana-Wyoming border, just a tad east of Yellowstone National Park. These are two different birds, but seemed to be hunting together in an upland meadow. I am thinking they are juveniles, but I'm not seeing enough red on the tail to call them Red-tailed Hawks, but I've seen so much variation in RTH's that I'm not sure. I'd appreciate any help to put a name on them.
Sorry, Ken, it took me a while to check on this. My first reaction was that you were correct in your ID but I wanted to confirm, and I still think you are correct- immature Red-tailed Hawks. The light birds show that brown leading edge to the inner wing which your bird has. Your bird also shows the white bib and dark band across the lower chest. Immatures don't show red in their tails in my experience.
