Capture Information:
This image was taken Tilton, NH on Silver Lake.
I shot this image from the back deck using a tripod on 8/25/2009 at 8:06 am.
I used a Nikon D2x at F5.6 / SS 1/500 with 55mm lens
I converted the image to a B&W in LR
Post Processing
I did perform some cropping on the image to remove wasted space.
Levels/Curves/USM and NIK Silver Efex Pro were used.
I used Photoshop burn tool 10% on the threes in areas to even out the black tone.
Cynthia, you are a woman after my ever lovin' black and white heart! It's a beautiful image and you've done a wonderful job with it. It has a very soft, mystical feel to it. The one thing I might respectfully recommend would be to take it another step and see what you can do to bring out a few more of the light tones - maybe where the fog is rising off the water in the BG or in the FG between the two most upfront birds. I think it's still possible to pull a little bit more out of it as far as tonal range and still retain this lovely mood.
I agree with Jules, and a big welcome to BPN! This is a very nice first post! Love the mist and the hint of softness that it gives to the BG detail. I like the composition too although I feel the trees are a little crowded at the top, but not by much.
We encourage all who post images to also comment on other images. It's a great learning experience for all concerned! Have a go! We are interested in everyone's opinions.
Hi Cynthia - Big warm welcome to BPN - dont hesitate to jump right in and leave comments on other peoples images - no better or faster way to improve your own images. All we ask is that you say what it is you like or dont like about the image.
Nice first post.
John and Jules make some good points - I would try cropping some from the bottom - more of a pano format could work well here also.
Looking forward to seeing more :)
Thank you all for your warm welcome and your kind suggestions. I reposted the image for your review. I trying my best to incorporate your changes except for Lance's suggestion for a pano format. When I re-cropped to a pano it cut the tree reflections so I backed out that change.
Cynthia, Welcome to BPN from a fellow New Jerseyan. You've come to the right place to learn a lot, both from posting your images and from commenting on others'. This is a sweet image and a lovely first post. Good advice given above. In addition, there seems to be a bit of a halo around the three ducks, probably coming from sharpening the image. Hard to avoid in a situation like this with high-contrast edges. It might have been possible to selectively sharpen only the three ducks, since the rest of the image has a nice atmospheric OOF look to it anyway. Just a thought.
