Belted Kingfisher on Bayou Drive, Florida (near Bayport)

I have tried to get a Kingfisher picture for the past three years in two different states. Last Firday I had an hour free for some shooting. I had seen a pair on Kingfishers three days earlier (they are part of the fall migration to Central Florida) and headed to the spot of my last sighting. Within five minutes after arriving this Kingfisher landed nearby in good light. After three years of chasing, I finally had my best opportunity.
Why 1/2500 for a stationary bird? Having a history of not been able to get close to a stationary kingfisher, I was setup for a flight shot. When he landed, my intention was to be sure I got a shot then adjust; however he flew off before I could adjust.
I'm not too fond about the shadow, but as illusive as this bird has been, I will forgive the shadow.
Scott,
Wonderful shot! I really like the mossy green background. If it was mine I would crop a little off the top.
I'm working on kingfishers in flight too. Florida is a great place to get it.
Hey Scott, congrats on finally getting an opportunity with this species (I'm still waiting for mine....). Exposure looks good, as do the details. The shadow does not bother me at all. I'd crop at right, and I wish the head was angled a bit more towards us (although with this body angle the KF would admittedly look a bit too twisted at the neck!)
Congrats on getting your dream shot Scott. Good work on the exposure, and I like the pose. The shadow doesnt bother me either. If this were mine, I would maybe bring in from both sides.
Not an easy bird to get. This is one fine capture. Love the over the shoulder look. Might crop it a bit tighter by taking some off the top and left side. I think it would make for an even stronger image.
