    Default Queen of the Castle

This little lady has taken up residence in an old roadside brush pile. I've driven by a few times and noticed her sitting atop her castle catching some rays, but she usually ducks into the pile whenever a car comes along. I finally decided to parked the "rolling blind" on the way by and staked-out the den for a while - it really didn't take her very long to come back top-side and go back about her business...

Two distracting out-of-focus stalks of bright yellow grass were cloned out of the right side of the image.

The o'cast conditions have worked in your favour here Jeff with nice even lighting and a stunning BG, the upright branch on left is a tad distracting, but granted you take what is presented.

    Jeff,

Looks like you will have some additional opportunities to get out to focus her. Please let me know what is this animal?

Branches, including the large upright one, seem to be were critical sharp focus was obtained and not her face or eyes preferably. If you were using multiple sensors, try a single one. I like this BG so I am sure you will get some nice closeups on yur next visit. A tighter composition with concentrating your image more on her and not the brush pile.

Thanks for posting and I am looking forward to seeing more of this and others images from you.

I think it is a ground hog, aka a woodchuck (Marmota monax).

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for your comments. As Andrew stated this is a "Groundhog" (Marmota Monax). I hope to get out again for a few more shots with this subject, but given the way things are going up here, the background may not be so green next time!

I am not sure if it is the .jpeg compression, but I agree that focus doesn't look that sharp on the eye at the posted size, however, if I go to the original file, the focus looks pretty good...

    Regards,
    Jeff

jeff...a turn of the head slightly to the left would put both eyes clearly visible.....I like the branches making something of a frame and showing habitat!
