Default Ohio - Great Blue Heron Rookery Report

Near Cuyahoga Falls there's a GBH Rookery off the side
of the road on West Bath Road.

Every February the males return to claim their nest and
start to prepare for the females to arrive.

The females typically arrive in late February or early March.

I haven't had a chance to scout the area this past weekend, no
thanks to two feet of snow, but the females should be there.

If the weather is at least above 30, I'll be out there at 8am on
March 15. One of the other members from this forum might be
making the trip. So I figured to extend an open invitation to any
one else here who might be interested.

Because of the horrible position of the sun, there really is only
one tree to shoot at. If there is sun, 10:30am is usually the latest
one can shoot. So pray for an overcast day :)

Bring your longest lens, you're gonna need it. Anything in the 400mm
range, be prepared to take some flight shots.

The actual location of the rookery is between the roads Riverview and
Akron-Peninsula. West Bath Road is the road you want. There's a
real nice long pull off for people to park.

I should be the only person there with a black 2004 Monte Carlo with
    hood scoops.

If I have to cancel, check here late Friday nite...or send me a pm if
you're interested in going and I'll let you know that way also.

Any questions, just let me know.

    Doug

Just in case anyone was interested in going, I won't be there.
    Just haven't been feeling well.

This spot really is only good in the evening hours IMO, otherwise you are working with side or backlight. Partly cloudy evenings are best because it's just sky behind the nests.

I drive past the rookery a few times a week on my way to work. The activity is really picking up. Agree that best shots are evenings, but I'm going to try the 10:30 view. Send me a note if any of you are going. I live real close and would like to meet you.
