Default Mt Evans SW of Denver

Can anyone tell me when they usually close the road to the top of Mt Evans?
What would be a good spot for animals in Colorado the 2nd week of September?

    Thanks in advance, Jim

    Hello James.
What kind of animals? e.g. there are bipeds all over;) and they come in a lot of varieties.;);)

Mount Evans is great for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmots, pikas, ptarmigan, and occasional others. Once they close the road (above summit lake Sept 7), access to animals is more limited. In the lower areas around tree line to echo lake there are hummingbirds (not sure about hummers in Sept though).

Rocky Mountain N. Park has a lot of elk. Also bighorn sheep but the park service usually closes roads and you can't get within a 1/4 mile of a bighorn if they spot it first. Interesting the contrast with Mt Evans. So if you can get there before Sept 7, go for Mt Evans. If coming from low elevation, you need to acclimatize for at least a day before going up unless you are in really great shape.

    Roger
