    Default LoonScape

Wedge Pond, Kananaskis Country, Alberta, August 2010
The loon came over to investigate me early one misty morning.
The ripples he made were partially erased when I flipped (vertically) the image in a layer, to use the sharp mountain top portion and then shifted, masked and blended.
    All C&C welcome.

    Nice image and application, Steve.

    Like the soft effect.

Hey Steve, I am not at all sure of what you did, but I love the mood and the overall image design (but for one small change as per the repost.) The REFL of the tops of the trees looks a bit funky.

If you would kindly post the original capture here full frame it would give us a better idea of what you did :)

ps: I always like the subject off-centered.

Thanks Mark and Arthur. Here is the image before the flip composite.
Artie, I really like the off center loon!

Glad for that and YAW. The ORIG looks pretty good on its own. I like that the tree reflections are less jagged in the ORIG.

If I am understanding correctly you copied the sharp stuff, flipped it, and then ????

Steve, I like the image a lot. I think you did a great job w/ the flip and it adds a bit more punch to the scene. I do like the loon off-centered. Nicely done.

My method may be a bit of a hack :) but here goes...
I started with 2 separate copied original images (CS5 files).
Flip one vertically and copy and paste into 2nd (top) layer of right side up copy.
Change the blend of this 2nd (top) layer to something that allows the bottom layer to show through.
Take the move tool and reposition the top layer so it's sharp mountain tops (now upside down) are superimposed with blurry, reflected tops of mountains on bottom layer.
Change the blend mode back to normal.
Mask the top image and erase (large feather, medium opacity brush) all except the sharp mountain tops at the bottom.
This can get rid of the ripples as much or as little as you like.

I do like the original and just took this as an opportunity to try something OOTB. :)
Completely missed the option to shift the loon over.:o

    Hope this helps.

Off centering the bird was the first thing I thought when I saw this beautiful image. I would even crop out the entire sky on the bottom, but just a personal preference.

Beautiful image and you did a great job creating the reflection with a flip.
