I photographed this young gator Sunday at JN "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge. I converted it to sepia tone. I used my Sony A700 with a 50-500mm Sigma lens from tripod. I just wish I could of been lower. Data-ISO 800, 500mm, -0.7 ev, f/18, 1/400. Thanks for looking, John
John, this is a really cool image! You've really managed to bring a lot of textural interest to the croc's head. I did a few small tweaks to see if I could bring it out even further and have a few suggestions for you.
First, when the image is this strong, crop tight! Since the head is elongated, I chose a vertical 8x10 crop to give the viewer an even closer of the details. I added a round of noise reduction to the water only to get rid of some of the noise that I imagine was introduced with the tonal changes.
Finally, I added a high pass filter at 3 pixels on a separate layer. I then changed the blend mode to Soft light and left it at 100% opacity, but you could lower it to give it a more subtle change. I then added a slight round of USM to crisp it up even more.
One other thing I noticed as I went to save the image is that the face could use a bit of CCW rotation to bring the eyes level.
I think you got a great angle here...any lower and it wouldn't show all the detail that you got on the bridge of it's nose.
Hi - different for sure - looks like a embossing :) Im a bit out of the box ;) If it was me I would consider painting a little colour back into the eye's assuming there was some there to begin with.
Jules crop certainly puts the attention on the head more - prefer the vertical to horizontal.
Good show :)
Very interesting image, the sepia tone made this look like a metallic badge. Nice re-post made by Julie, however I prefer the original crop as it gives me a feeling of lying silently and wait for a prey :D
Hi John....very interesting image! Like the original but it needs some noise reduction....repost also good....If you could paint in some color to the eyes as suggested I think it would raise it another level.
When I see a gator photo my eyes light up! This is beautiful, I like the sepia tone very much. I do like Julie's rendition a bit better and agree with rotation. A more vertical crop with extra space below would look cool, I think.
