I shot this today. Does it qualify for "birds in habitat" if I cropped it about 50%" He looks a little bedraggled because he survived a hard steady rain of .93 inches yesterday.

Hi, Andrew. I think this portrays well the feeling of habitat, and I like the composition. It looks like the sky has been over-processed though. I'm guessing it was pretty bright/washed out, so you attempted get some blue back in, but I think it's gone a little too far. I'm no post-processing guru, but I know many people here are very good at it and will likely have some good strategies for you. You might post a more "RAW" version of the image and see what ideas you get from others about how to deal with the sky.
I like the bird and FG but the background overwhelms it as it is big and bright, especially with the horizon line postitioned right behind the head.

It is a bird in habitat but it is not a good photograph.... Head angle and rule of thirds COMP were a step in the right direction. The EXP looks good and the SH looks OK but:
1-the sky has a mega CYAN cast
2-the o-o-f leaves are quite distracting
3-the rock or log (?) in the BKGR cuts through the bird's head just below the bill. That is very distracting.
The way to create a nice habitat image of this species is to photograph it in a complete rocky setting :)
