What is the smallest backpack that will accommodate a 300 f2.8 lens on a camera body. Olympus in my case, but i believe most manufacturers 300 mm lenses are close to each other in size. I do need to be able to carry the hood reversed in the backpack. Enough room also for a flash and 2x and 1.4x converters. I have a monster Lowepro backpack that can easily do it but is a bear to use and carry in the field. Some protection for the gear would be nice but it does not have to be very heavily padded.

    Thanks.

    Sincerely,

    Hany.

Have a look at the Lowepro Flipside 400AW.

I use a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW with my 300/2.8 , 7D and a 2x converter attached, with the hood reversed it just fits. This backpack also is just inside the UK airports hand luggage size so hand for flying.

The Think Tank Glass Taxi will hold my D3 attached to 300/2.8 VR with hood reversed. There should be enough room for a flash and TC's along side the lens also.

Take a look at the LowePro website. They have a match finder, you can add your equipment and it will tell you what bags fit. I used it for 2 bags and so far so good...

I travel a lot with the MP-7 with the following gear:
    D3 or D300
    300f2.8 VR (hood reversed)
    TC 1.4 + TC 2
    SB-800
and still room for 3 more lenses

I also find this site usefull to choose a bag
