    Default Set-Up for Photographing Cottonmouths

My friend guided me in his 14' Mad River Canoe on the Mingo and Castor rivers in southeast Missouri this past week. I was in search of one of Missouri's five pit viper snakes, the western cottonmouth, or water moccasin if you prefer. It was pretty dicey going through the riffles but I just put my complete trust in his piloting skills. I obtained some beautiful shots of this formidable viper and I've posted a some of them on my website at www.dannybrownphotography.com.

You got that right. At one point, Mark paddled me right up to my minimum focus point and the snake was looking right at me. Even though it was 15' away it looked like it was ready to grab me where the sun don't shine, if you know what I mean.

I knew there was something about Danny I liked(and it's not the Canon gear;)).
Come walk through Fakahatchee Strand Swamp with me - cottonmouths and gators! Another 80 miles south and I can through in crocodiles.

Yes....I have one that looks like the creature from the black lagoon rising up out of the water. Thanks for taking a look at the website.

The common man's anti-venom haha. Nice setup. Looks pretty stable.

It's great when a friend of yours is walking down a trail and his next step would have been on a Cottonmouth. Good times. haha

Danny, I spent my entire childhood running from those things and there you go chasing them down for a look. Just seeing the photos on your website brought dread and fear into my heart. I'll stay safely on shore, TYVM.

Danny, that image of the week is excellent. Nice setup. But me careful my friend. I used to catch snakes back in India in my college days( wild ones that used to venture into homes and gardens. "catch and release them in the forest" activity) and over time have learnt to respect and enjoy them from far. Using the longest lens is the wise thing to do :-)

Danny, that's a great setup and you got some fantastic shots! If you want some close-ups, come on by for a visit. I've got a Cottonmouth in a barrel in my garage right now!

    Hey Danny,
Just looking at the set-up made me cringe!!! Don't let the insurance company see that one!:p I think I'd be too worried about tipping!

Yea...remember the movie Risky Business......sometimes you just have to say, "What the @%&*"!!! By the way, if you look real close, you can see the safety string on my Gitzo.....I'm not that crazy.
