The great egret had been preening itself and then decided scratch. Captured with Nikon D3 500 F4 lens 1.4 telly converter. ISO 200, 700 mm, F8, 1/400. Adjusted in light room and Photoshop, selective sharpening of the head and eye and cropped.
Interesting activity but pose looks a bit awkward and facing away doesn't help. While not clipped the whites lack detail and can be improved with a linear burn at about 30% opacity. I would crop a bit from above to eliminate some of the OOF reeds and possibly blur them a little.
Myer, I like the unusual pose and the water adds some interest. I think the BG reeds are fine. I agree w/ Tony regarding the whites. Nice sharp details. :)
The repost is a disaster :) At best.... You Linear Burned some of the middle tones giving a black outline look to the chin.... For the ORIG, you needed to move to your left. The BKGR has some funky BOKEH--the sort of jangly look.... The ORIG is sharp and I like the scratching pose.
