Can someone say if a canon extension tube on the 600mm/F4 lens allows for autofocus or would I have to switch to manual focus Thanks in advance.

I have used Kenko extension tubes on my 500mm f/4 lens to photograph backyard birds. You can still autofocus, but the focus acquisition time will be slower as the lens tends to hunt more. However, you can't focus on infinity. Hope this helps.

The short extention tubes on the 600mm work well but you lose infinity focus. Useful for small birds close up.
I am shooting large birds and find that I am too close. Does the extension tube "move the subject" further away?
No, the ET shortens the minimum focus distance. It works great with the 500mm f/4 and the 600mm f/4 for close up birds, bees, butterflies, etc. You can't focus at infinity since your maximum focus distance is greatly shortened. If one is good, two can be really neat. Combine it with a 1.4x teleconverter and it's a very effective macro setup.
