    Default Another Snowy Flip

    D3 + TC17EII (340mm) 1/5000 @ f/4.5 ISO4000 -.67EV Maxtrix HH Overcast Heavy Crop

PP +.33EV in conversion, color adjustments in LAB, whites detail, NR, selective sharpening

Learning to like the LAB color space (Thanks, John).

Wish I could have gotten closer (or had more lens reach)...

    Thanks for looking...

    Cheers,

Nice framing and timing and a good head angle but noise is still excessive and image quality and feather detail are at the low end of the scale.... How big a crop? Did you push your histogram to the right?

In addition you might consider eliminating most of the round white spots in the water.

    Artie,

Greetings. Thanks for commenting... This was whittled down to 948x1184 and I was under-exposed by about 1/3EV (retrieved in raw conversion). I hadn't adjusted ISO enough during the morning increase in ambient light (given the heavy overcast)... could have gained a stop on the noise. Very little detail overall owing (I think) to in order - crop, noise & overcast lighting. IQ has a lot to be desired.

    Practice, practice, practice ;)

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Thanks Michael. Sounds as if you are on the right track. I never understand those pixel dimensions; can you post a JPEG of the fuill frame ORG capture?

Ah, that explains a lot. That is a huge, huge crop.... Thus the noise and the low IQ.

It really does explain a lot! Even in the second post you can see that the bird is just slightly OOF and it shows even more when you crop him down. It is all about practice, though! It sounds like you know what to do next time and we look forward to seeing that image as well!

    Julie,

Greetings. Ah, I see it is oof now. Good catch. Checking back on the AF - focus is not locked :o ... A shot two seconds earlier was locked and the IQ while not great is better for being in focus (uh, duh).

    Live & learn.

    Thanks for looking & commenting...

    Cheers,

    -Michael-
