Went out to practice sunsets. The sky never really lit up but this fellow came along sat on the rock and started composing a song. Ah hah! Sometimes we don't always get what we expect but we can take what is given, providing we recognize it.

I like this John. The composition is classic and the colours really convey the feeling of the setting sun. Love the rim light around the subject. It's easy to overexpose a sunset and then it looks like midday (well not quite but you get my meaning). Your exposure looks good here. The tonal range of this image is far too great for any digital camera to capture and subtle HDR or exposure blending would have worked well.

Speaking of composing you needed to move to your right to open up some space between the sun and the composer :) That would have resulted in better compositional balance.

Yup, absolutely! Unfortunately, there was a tree in the way which could not be moved. I hope to re-visit the site and stage the scene with my wife for better placement of the sun wrt "composer".

Could you have stood in front of the tree either to the right or left of it?

Here is the original composition before the huge crop, waaaaay unbalanced. Just a hint of the tree is there, probably can be worked around. I didn't recognize the better composition(cropped version) until I got back to my desktop with the larger screen. Yes, I'm still going back there in the next few days. I'm sure there is a much better composition available. I'll figure it out!

Moving to your right of the tree and using a slightly longer focal length (if available) might have been the way to go..
