At the back of a truck stop in Brazil, this beautiful male hid in the dense undergrowth for at least 10 minutes - he popped into one of the only holes in the cover that were lit, and I managed to get a couple of images before almost passing out over how beautiful he was! I filled up with gas this morning, and I couldn't find anything quite as nice behind my local Shell station...

I know the feeling! Stunning bird in a challenging lighting situation. Fill flash would have had a big impact on overall image quality. I rarely use flash in the states, but when I head down to Costa Rica I almost never take my flash off. I do like how the ray of sunshine hits the breast and much of the head. Nice detail in the reds. I wish you would have gotten a better head angle. And I would tone down the bright area of perch beneath the bird.

Good advice from Doug. If this bird's face is as red as the chest I can only imagine how beautiful this species can be!!

Thanks guys, I actually had 2 more images with fill flash that did show the whole bird (different pose) but I was taken by the spotlight effect on the head and took this one without the flash. Good thought on the perch, it certainly draws the eye away - I also wished for a slightly different HA, but this was all he would give me!
    Many Thanks, great comments

Hi George, beautiful bird and interesting spotlight effect. Fine detail on the brighter portions look to be lacking in detail... almost painterly. Was this a large crop?
