    1/250 sec f/7.1 ISO 400

50% crop (actually probably somewhat more than that), S/H, and sharpening in CS5

I was thinking that a bit more DOF would have been nice, but I like this anyway.

It works for me, fine detail and I like the composition. I don't know how big these grasshoppers (?) are but I suspect focus stacking would be de rigour to get all in focus

This one has enough detail for me and I'm guessing this little guy is no more than 1/2" long...:D

Thanks, folks. He's less than 1/4". I've never tried focus stacking -- I'm going to have to learn about that!

    Hey Ian,
Not bad on the sharpness....sharp where it nees it! Before going focus stack route.....you could have easily sacrificed SS.....down to 1/100 or 1/125 for that lens giving you one more stop for DOF. 7D.....ISO 650....for another 2/3. and given that it appears you got a great angle.....that could have made this much sharper in the DOF range.....but again......good where it is now. So just keep this in mind.....especially if the little guy isn't moving too much! Nice job with the flash too!

Thanks for the comments, Roman. Yes, I could have sacrificed SS, but I was handholding (gasp ... I know...I know ...). I probably could have kept the SS and cranked up the flash a bit and decreased my aperture, though.

    Hey Ian,
I HH my macros 90% of the time because of the flash! 1/125 will normally do the trick.....it's the flash that will freeze the motion......in most cases!
