Default Not So Lesser Yellow LEGS!

It is rare to get a shorebird perched up on anything at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, NY. I created this image late on Thursday with the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens, the 1.4X II TC, and the EOS 1-D MIV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/400 sec. at f/8.

I love the light (and catchlight) and separation from the bg. I can see why it's rare to get a shorebird on a perch...with the length of their legs they have a built in one.

Looks like +2/3 brought out the beautiful detail in the upper portion but the lower white seems a tad hot??? Maybe my monitor or would this be considered a happy medium?
A stunning image either way , and yes , a rare occurance.

I see Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers perched once in a while, but never in photographic range or in nice surroungs. True though, that most other species almost never do like the use of a perch - at least not in public :-)

Lovely image througout. I wouldn't mind seeing the yellowlegs a little higher in the frame, with a little more perch showing - but this comp works as is too.

Maybe he popped up there to get a better look at the funny looking monster with the giant eye. ;)

I love the light, pose, and bg in this one, Artie. The perch is cool too!

Nice perch, pose, and BG. Exposure looks good. Haven't had a chance to photograph this species yet.

Dan, The perch got uglier below and I have lots of wider ones to prove it. Joe. Get your monitor calibrated or adjust the angle of your screen with the calibration strip; the whites are fine.

Have had this bird in my yard many times.
Curious, for me the image seems very flat (2-dimensional). Is that a function of the longer lenses?

Not sure what you mean by flat... I have been loving pure BKGRs like this for more than two decades so if that is what you mean by flat then that is a good thing..... Long lenses to compress the elements of a composition but here the only two elements are on the same plane....

Great Image (again) Artie, I disagree with Joe the whites look fine on both my calibrated monitors but like Deborah I find it looking a bit flat but knowing your penchant for "Clean BKGRs" I would have been surprised had it not been so :)

I sold my 800 f/5.6 on Monday last week after only a few months but may buy it back when my friendly overpaid surgeon to whom it was sold to, realizes it will be of no use to him as he has no patience, I got $11,800 AUD for it and intend to offer him $8000 for it before Summer.

It is a superb lens but my 500 f/4 has spoiled me as I can happily hand hold it all day and my Gitzo CF weighs nothing and I carry that on a rifle sling if I need it, the Wimberley lives in my back pack.
