    Default Learning CS5

I am looking for a book to help in learning CS5. I would be interested in what people have found to be useful. Thank you for any input.

Hi Joe- Tonnes of resources out there, some for earlier CS versions but still very useful.

I find the Scott Kelby books some of the best.

As well as books there are many resources on the web, including very useful how-to videos and Podcasts.

    Joe:

I Highly recommend Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book, by Ellen Anon & Josh Anon. This is a 470 page, well illustrated and explained Photoshop book that I would not be without. I had the prior book for Photoshop CS3 by Anon, and I ordered the new book immediately upon upgrading to CS5.

I've spent the summer reading "Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers by Ellen Anon and Josh Anon" together with "The Adobe Photoshop Layers Book by Richard Lynch". The Layers book only covers up to CS4 sofar but I didn't really feel that I missed much by reading it instead of a book on CS5. I think both these books are excellent and I learned heaps of stuff on how Photoshop works.

I also have to admit that I really dislike anything written by Scott Kelby and I have read books by him on Photography and Photoshop. Reading him I think will teach you a few tricks but not really give any real insight.

My personal favorite for CS4 and now the CS5 edition is by Martin Evening: "Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers". Comes with a DVD and was very recently published. The author's balance, clarity, overall writing style and the layout of the book work very well together. The CS5 "workshop" book by Martin Evening will be published soon, and I look forward to reading it as well - the CS4 "workshop" book was very helpful.

I hope this suggestion helps. I think Amazon provides a "look inside" feature for their listing of the book.

I like www.lynda.com. I know it's not a book but I find it useful to watch the tutorials. Some even have a transcript that you can print and then follow along and take notes.

Scott Kelby's book on CS5 is now available and is a terrific learning resource. He includes images you can download to work with. Check Amazon

I agree with Svante that some readers may have a problem with books by Scott Kelby. I would add that I think that Kelby spends too much time trying to be humorous. I prefer authors who stick to the subject at hand and do a very good job of explaining it.

I now have all the versions of the Anon book. I found it very useful. A couple of things that I learned from the earlier edition were changed subsequently. I preferred the earlier techniques (they fit my workflow better) so I still refer to earlier editions occasionally.
