Whats not quite right with this image in your opinion - what would you change or do differently either at the time of shooting or in PP.

oh cool ---if it was mine, I would be really happy ---

ok - i'm really new at participating, so not sure if this is what you meant, but if it were mine I would wish :

    1. that I had maybe sacrificed a little of the shutter speed for more depth of field when I took it as long as the water was still blurred behind it (and if it were me, i know i would have forgotten to do negative comp for the white bird)
    2. wish the eye and bill, and feet/legs looked sharper (lousy eyesight here, so that could be just me)
    3. wish for more detail showing in the white of the head/neck/body - bring out the shadow in the curve of the neck up tight to the body

    4. I find it very hard to find a crop that adds interest to photos - would play with that

    Hi Lance

I would be very happy with this shot as well so... for me I would (1) try and remove (darken) the lighter coloured streak in the background about level with the top of the wings. I find it slightly distracting. (2) Check the whites to see if they at too hot. Might get more ddetail in the whites if they were toned down. DOF looks fine to me, wing tips are in focus as well as the head/body. framing looks good, position of bird (HA) & wings is good. No noise in the shot, so not sure what else could be wrong.

Pressed the shutter button earlier?? Looks like the bird is past you. Whites look OK, and looks pretty sharp to me, although I think you could have gone f8 and 1/2000th with no problem just for extra DOF. Not sure if wings are completely up.

It may need a little ccw rotation, bird is just a very little tad past you and on my monitor photo looks a little flat.

I also like the idea of more dof by bumping ISO or dropping ss.

Agree, bird seems like away from you...
Whites look good, 5.6 works in this case...1/4000 is a bit much but rather have than then blurred some..

    ALL VAID POINTS - GOOD!

IMHO - Head is also angled away - prefer the wings to be fully up or fully down.

    Hi Lance

You are probably done with this post, but can I ask one more question?

Am I right it thinking the only way to change the head angle in this shot would be to push the shutter button earlier (ie as it approaches you), given that birds generally fly with their head pointing directly forward..?

Hi Don - yes - this is a fraction too late - best to get the bird before it gets to the point were it is past your position. Head was also angled away in this shot - a indication of were the bird was about to fly.
