Adding Canvas

I often see in posts that people say they added canvas. I figured out a way on my own in CS3 but I am sure there has to be an easier way than mine. Please explain the steps you use.

If you dont have the technique 100% after Fab's link and can wait a while a tutorial on this exact technique will be in my next Photoshop Technique CD complete with step by step screenshots. This is the method I use now and is the quickest and easiest I have seen anywhere. I dont think you will have seen anything like it anywhere.
