The iridescence of hummingbird feathers is amazing. This little gem is an Andean Emerald from Tandayapa Lodge in Ecuador.

    Canon 20D, Canon 300 f4 L IS, 1/160, f4, ISO 400.

    Comments and critiques very welcome.

I like what you did with this, the colors are great and its a creative way of showing a hummingbird. The crop is what bothers me though, can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't draw me in. Could be the black frame, which seems overpowering.

Love the feather detail, Nancy and the catchlight helps also. I agree with Connie about the heavy black border. I think a very thin black border might work better and a little more room on the top and right. Beautiful bird, TFS!

Here is the image with a thinner border. Do folks have a preference? I thought about adding more on the right as suggested but was afraid that any more of the bill would make it look stumpy. Thank you for looking:)

I'm a very thin border kind of guy, but about the photo...

I've not found one of my photos for this project yet and I think it's because when I crop in to the feathers I lose points of interest, but if I leave the eye in it draws attention away from the feathers. I get that same feeling with yours - I'd prefer to see this picture as a portrait rather than as a photo of feathers.
Love the feathers though, similar to what I see on sunbirds here.

Nancy, I prefer a very thin border (much thinner than your repost) and agree with Graeme that posting this as a portrait of the whole head including bill would be an improvement. You could do a fairly tight head crop and still show off the feathers of this gorgeous bird.

I definitely like the thinner border better, gives back to the bird what the thicker border took away.

Nancy - here is a much thinner border and a modest bit of smart-sharpening. It could also use just a tiny bit more room at the top but I didn't attempt that.

Nancy, thanks for being part of the project. I like your idea very much, maybe showing a bit more of the bill would make it better and I like the smaller frame too.
Hope you are doing OK :)
