This Giant Kingfisher posed nicely for us one morning in the Mankwe hide of the Pilanesberg National Park, but offered very little that morning in the line of action.

    Techs:
    Canon 7D with 100-400mm L IS USM @ 400mm
    f7.1 @ 1/2500 SS @ ISO-1250
Shutter priority and auto-ISO in anticipation of the non-event of a take-off :)

    Morkel,

    SNAP;)

Just finished (well nearly) sorting out my bird images (kuckily not many) and was going to post a Giant Kingfisher tomorrow:D

I'll have to leave it for a few days now.

Great colour on the breast, looks strange all hunkered up was it cold?

Morkel, loved the crop and the light a lot. BG sweet as usual at this spot. Must be fun shooting at this location.

Hey Mork, sweet pose, and just love the placement here. Tack sharp against a typical Mankwe killer BG.

I like the composition, eye contact, sharpness and BG and would only remove the whitewash on the perch.

thanks guys. it is really nice to shoot here, I waited a long time to make my maiden voyage, believe I'll return shortly...

Axel - I don't like cloning/healing distinct parts of the scene anymore. I don't mind patching a few dust spots and bright spots in an OOF BG, but not parts of the in-focus image :)

Love the BKGR and the SH. I'd crop from left and bottom to get the bird more into the rule of thirds position. Bummer that the perch got fatter at the end as it obscures part of the breast....

I like all the room you've given the bird in the composition. It's quite pleasing, and I think I probably would have framed it tighter so it's nice to see other options out there to spark my creativity.

Great sharp detail and IQ. Like the comp. Subject is well exposed with good natural colours against a killer bg. Well done !

thanks for the comments and suggestions Nico, Arash, Artie & Aiden...

Seeing as the bird is gazing downward - here is a closer crop from left, top and bottom...

    Morkel,

This is much better, it is large by Kingfisher standards and deserves to be seen BIG.
