    Default Grizzly sow with cubs

I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time last Thursday morning, capturing this image of a grizzly sow with her four cubs. This is on the beach at Naknek Lake in Katmai National Park (near Brooks Falls). I am a little bothered by the blur in the foreground caused by some out of focus foliage in front of me, but I'm happy that it's not too prominent. The weather was basically clear, except one might say it was raining mosquitoes (which can clearly be seen in the image). Light was scarce and I had to make compromises with iso and shutter speed, shooting way slower than I would have preferred.

Details: Canon 1D Mk2N, EF500 f4L IS lens tripod mounted, 1/160 at f4, iso 800 in natural light. This crop is approximately 2/3 of the original frame.

Holy cow that's a lot of mosquitoes! What a great capture. Naknek Lake is an amazing place, if you have deet! This image is priceless, I love the colors that compliment the image of the bears. I actually think you might be able to somehow clean up the foreground--or maybe someone else can give you another foreground fix? Thank you for sharing!

Absolutely stunning, the quality of Bear images on this forum is remarkable.

No problems with the foreground for me, the looks on the the faces of the two tanding cubs is truly PRICELESS.

I think I'll get my MkIIn out of the cupboard:)

Wow I love this image. To get the mom & four cubs, that all by itself is wonderful but then add the expressions, the mosquitoes and the cubs looking away and the mom right at you Wow!

Excellent capture, would be extremely happy to get something like this later this month. Just proves you do not need the latest bit of kit to get a good image. Very well done Tim.

This is a lovely image Tim, and well captured. The position of the cubs, relative to their mother and their expressions are all fantastic. I think all of the mosquitos is a bonus in this image. Must have been a thrill taking this shot!

Thank you all for your kind and gracious comments. This was probably the best trip I've ever taken from a photography standpoint, and although I made some mistakes and missed some shots, I mangaed to also get some images I really like. I will be posting a few more images from this trip, including one I think I like better than this one, that I captured just a few seconds later.
