    Default Black-backed Woodpecker

I found a nice burn area in Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba and was able to find several nests of both these guys and American Three-toed. I emerged from the forest covered in black soot...but smiling nonetheless :)

Great looking bird I had never seen. Nice soft light and great EXP. Perfect head angle. A bit tight at bottom and I may take some off the tree to make it more of a 1 to 3 ratio of BG and tree. Well done, Glenn.

Great find and sharpness, the burned trunk complements the plumage well. Interesting that they seem to find enough food there. I like Fabs' crop idea.

Hate to say it but this is the best image of this species that I have ever seen. By far. Could use a smidge more room below.

I wouldn't mind a bit more room, but I really love this image. Nice exposure and fill flash. You nailed a lot of species on your trip!

Glenn, super image. Love the way the darker colours make the yellow stand out and the detail in the blacks is outstanding.

Glenn. Unbelievable image. Perfection. One little thing - there is something that looks like a reddish flare in the bark at top center. I see some reddish sap in other spots but this one looks more artificial - maybe a lens flare of some sort?

Good eye Dan. Whatever it is, I am guessing that it is sap-related...

I think it is indeed just sap...

Lighting and sharpness put it over the top, touch more room would have been nice but sure is great lighting.
