The last three days have been very frustrating for two days we had lots of mist but the birds were there, today no mist and they flew off just as we arrived.

Here is another image from the original sighting.

    EOS 1D MkIII

    28-300mm at 300mm hand-held on foot.

    F6.3, ISO 800, 1/320

    What a stunning looking bird,
I like the pose, HA and the green BG.
Though I'm not sure about the river bed, it makes image special.
From here I can see a few artifacts around the bill and head (I'm with my laptop)

Thank you Ken, for posting the link as I didn't have much information about these beautiful birds, now I feel even more fortunate to have had a sighting. I'm hoping they will survive the continuing conflicting use of natural resources.

Your crane is sharp and pops out nicely from the bg; interesting that the blue of the crane is so like that in the stones. Thanks again.

Ken, interesting looking bird. Looks like it was carved out of marble, perhaps due to the shape and solid look of its head

A beautiful bird for sure. It has a very friendly look to it. Great of you to be able to photograph it!

Would you have been able to get lower by any chance? Reason for this is that I am not crazy about the rocks' horizon line skimming over the crane's back and across it's neck. By getting down lower (if possible, of course) you may have been able to lower that line to run behind the back and chest instead.

Still, nice image and thanks for the informative link.

Great that you captured an open shot of this wonderful bird. The river bed doesnt distract, but I would maybe run some NR on the foliage.

Nicely done Ken. A great subject.

I think the artefacts around the head are colour noise in the greenish BKGR. I agree with Daniels observations.

Nice pose and the detail in the bird looks great. I think the intersection of the rock/foliage boundary with the bird's neck is distracting. Moving up would put the line above the bird, down would move the line to a less distracting position. I think moving down would be best, but I'm not sure.

    hope this helps,
    Alan

A quick update, they are back in their normal place this nmorning, but is misty!

I will go back later, this morning, fingers crossed.

There is a lot of noise which I have not removed succesfully, if possible I will try again with Al Forms suggestions on exposure.

Getting lower would be vey difficult as below me is a fairly deep river, and I only have short Wellies, I also really do not want to "break cover".
