    Default Brown Hooded Kingfisher

My first of this species, and unfortunately a fairly large crop, as he was quite far away. I have made the most of the opportunity, and like the look back pose. Taken in the Pilanesberg nature reserve a couple of weekends ago.

Congrats on the first capture of a new species. (Certainly a new one for me.) I'm always pleased when I get a new one. Look-back pose is great, and everything else looks good to me. I suspect you would have taken some more off the bottom (maybe 1/3 of the space between bottom and bird?) were it not that the crop is already large.

Stuart, superb bird, pose and exposure. loved the BG too. Since its a already a large crop, I wont suggest you to crop more. I find it a little too pano. A little room added in front of the bird might make it better? not sure.

    Stuart,

You do not see these very often, or at least I don't, my best sighting was in the garden of a restaurant in Swellendam:), and like you it was a long way off, so a large crop was necessary.

If we keep looking I am sure one will eventually place itself a little nearer.

    It is a real beauty.

Congrats on the bird and I do love this pano crop - I think that it suits the comp really well. I love the look-back, the BG is super and I'm really enjoying the red and turquoise together :D

I'm with Nicki. I would not change a single pixel of this loverly composition. Love the perch and the subject placement. All the techs are right on. Light and head angle also sweet.

This looks very good considering the large crop. Composition, look-back pose and BG look great. I might sharpen the perch more as the bird is noticeably sharper.

Great job for the crop. you still have details in the feather and head is very sharp. Colors really hold this one together.

Very nice image Stuart. I think this is one of my favorites of your Kingfishers.

Very nice, Stu. Love the colours against the browns of the BG and perch. These used to visit my garden when I lived in Pietermaritzburg but all my old images are on slide film. They still seem fairly common there as when I was back recently we were at a cafe on the Dorp Spruit running through the Show Grounds and there were 2 along a short stretch - I didn't have a chance to go back with a camera but may be worth a stop on your next trip down to the beach in KZN.
