Default One for Fabs with thanks

I created this image last month while visiting Elliston, Newfoundland. Puffins nest on a couple of sea stacks close to a narrow point of land near the village. Occasionally they will land on that point. My daughter Laura and I waited for nearly 3 hours in fierce, biting Newfoundland wind waiting with hope that a puffin would land nearby. Finally about 30 minutes before sunset a couple did.

Fabs a special thanks to you for the information that you provided on both Witless bay and Elliston. :D

Canon EOS 40D, Sigma 50-500mm at 500mm, ExposureTime - 1/500 seconds, f6.30, ISO - 640 hand held while lying down. Cropped for composition to about 80% of full frame.
No flash use so as not to disturb the puffins (and other photographers).

The image is a bit soft likely due to the blowing wind which made everything challenging but I do like the open bill.

Very nice habitat and it brings back nice memories. The EXP is right on, with lots of detail in both B&Ws. YOu could sharpen the eye selectively if you so wished.
There's a bit of noise in the BG, quite easy to fix. Handholding a 500mm at 1/500 in windy conditions is big challenge...
Glad to have been of help!

Hi Stephen Don't think the bird is soft? Would darken the image some the sharpen the face area and smooth out the bg. Like the setting and feel very much....

Thanks Fabs. It was quite exciting. I'll look at the noise again.

Thanks Alfred I love your re-work. I'm not sure why I posted it so light.

Sounds like you had lots of fun!! I like the comp, and of course the open bill adds another element of interest. Al's repost is a nice improvement.

Thanks Dan. Perhaps I need to recalibrate my monitor again.

Composition, setting and open bill make this one for me. The repost looks very good, I only wish the OOF grass in the lower left were not there.

Thank you Axel. I agree about the OOF grass but if I had moved more to the right I might have knocked another photographer off the cliff. :D
