This juvenile Forster's Tern backpaddled very quickly after it was handed the treat by its parent. As if it was afraid that the adult might take it back...

As for the panoramic crop, I was a bit far away when this event evolved and a more traditional crop left a large empty space on top. So, I decided to go for the panorama to focus on the action. Curious about your thoughts.

Photographed at Santa Ana River, Huntington Beach, CA.

    Thanks in advance. JR

Oh I love this...the crop works perfectly and the details are really lovely. But what I like best is the quality of the light. You caught a great moment here!

I think the crop works well Joerg - it fits the shape of the image subject. Very nice lighting and exposure. The back-pedaling action and feather ruffling of the youngster really makes the image for me.

I also think the pano works very well here and am in agreement the the juvi backpeddling tells the story and sells this image. Nicely done.

Like the moment and the posture of the birds, and the low angle is really effective. I think the large crop may have caused some graininess around the head of the adult.

Love the action and the details of the chick's feathers are great. Just capturing enough detail of the adults eye in that black cap is difficult. Very, very nice.

Thank you all for the kind feedback. Chris is right that cropping here limited the image quality a bit. JR
