This is about a 10' alligator which lives in the lake near the Mayan ruins of Coba. I spotted it sunning and as I approached, the alligator slipped in the water and swam towards me. I backed off a bit. I was carrying a Panasonic Lumix FZ 50, 10 meg, equivalent to 35-420mm, very lightweight and it has image stabilization. The quality was satisfactory and it was a relief not to carry my full Canon set up since I had over 50 pounds of underwater video gear, plus my dive equipment. I think the experiment of taking this lightweight camera proved a good one. This was shot with a 420mm equivalent, handheld and there is no sharpening. I did not notice that the alligator was missing its right eye until I processed the image. Evidently the loss of one eye did not stop its growth.
Interesting background story. As a personal pref I usually delete animal images with missing eyes, in this case it makes it look even nastier.
Gators do not naturally occur in Mex. I have seen these guys in many other parts of Mexico (I assume you are referring to Coba, mex). They were introduced for the skin trade and reproduce well where they can.
