Default Best gloves for winter photography?

    Greetings all:

My fingers are still cold from last weekend shooting ducks. I have tried several different approaches to gloves, with limited success. I have used gloves with exposed fingers and a flip over mitt like cover, skiing glove liners, conventional leather gloves, etc.

Still searching for the best combination. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Does anyone use the little pocket hand warmers?

PS: Florida sounds more and more appealing!

To keep my hands/fingers warm I use the glove liners. Then
over top of that are the flip over mittens (fingerless...I actually
had to cut away the fingers, except for the thumb which stayed
    put).

I also keep a pack of hand warmers in my pockets to stick my
hands into. Those last a couple of hours and are great.

For a little more detail on what I do, check out Artie's Birds As
Arts Bulletin archive #210 on his site.

If it works, here's the link: http://www.birdsasart.com/bn210.htm

    Thanks Doug!

I had tried the half finger version with the mitt flip over part, but my fingers did get very cold, probably from the constriction of the glove fingers! I will trim the fingers back so they don't constrict, and get some nice glove liners.

I thank you, my fingers thank you, etc!

I do this very thing. The glove liners I use are made by Under Armour. They are skin tight and as easy to operate camera controls as with no gloves. They are somewhat light weight and good to around 20°....colder than that...I stay in.

    Thanks Ric:

I will be off to the sporting goods store to get some! I hope to get in a few hours this weekend if the weather is at least tolerable.

    Good pictures to you all!

I use "winter golf gloves", which you can get at any god golf store. They fit tight and are very flexible and are easy to work the button and knobs on the camera. They do a great job of keeping the wind off your hands but you will still need a warm pair of regular gloves as well.

I used these gloves when I was shooting in NYC.

I found that moving to Florida was a much better solution:D

I have a pair of those too!

Hmmm, $400K for a house in Florida or $29.95 for my my gloves.

    Yep...Florida would be better!

    Default Glove Solution

As I shoot a lot outdoors during the winter months, I was always searching fore the correct glove solution as those that were nimble enough to use weren't wind proof nor warm...especially in the case of the Lowepro goves...the wind whistles right through them.

One Sunday I went to a Patriots football game and everyone near me had a certain pair of gloves on..holding their beers while my hands were freezinf....I checked them out and they are great!

I now have a couple of pairs of Serius winter gloves and they are windproof and I can work the camera controls with no issues at all.

They were about $35, but well worth every penny of it.

Jim which model Serius? Just checked the site but they seem very bulky.

Don't know if you can get them in the USA but I have a pair of Thinsulate fleece gloves which I purchased really cheeply in a department store.
Really good for warmth and flexibility.

These are about as good as it gets! Look at "More Views" and you can see how your trigger finger slides out so you can press the trigger. Your finger is not bare it is inside a liner glove...these puppies rock and are soft as well.

    Default Serius Model

I'll have to look at the model this evening.....they aren't at all bulky...they are thin, 100% wind proof and work perfectly. I can pick up a dime with them, so they are pretty darned nimble :)

    I'll update this evening.

I use those flip-top mittens on top of thin wool gloves. When I want to manipuplate the camera buttons I just let only the index finger out while the others remain tucked inside. This combined with hot packs if/when needed is sufficient enough. Don't know if its the "best" that you are looking for...but it gets darned cold up here it this method has served me well ;-)

Now I usually buy a nice pair of comfortable gloves then slit the forefinger and thumb right under the first joint to allow the finger and thumb tip to operate my camera controls. Any good glove will work with this technique.

    Default Seirus Glove Info

Seirus Men's All Weather Glove Original....that's what mine are called and I paid about $35 for them.

They are listed at lots of places on line

(I bought one pair at the Sports Authority and a 2nd pair at REI)

If you're looking for gloves and not mittens with retractable fingertips, these are the best I've ever used...especially as they are windproof.
