Default Duck! - or should that be "Turn"!

Not many of us can compete with the IQ of Axel's last Common Tern post. But we can still have some fun :D. These birds were shot at John Chardine's favorite Common Tern colony in Shediac harbor, New Brunswick. Usually John is the one cleaning himself off after the visit there. But this daring chase ended in disappointment for the lower bird, which ended the dispute immediately. Now the confession: I clipped the upper bird's wing so had to add canvas and construct a new wing tip - first time I have dared to present such an undertaking to a crowd that I am sure would have noticed immediately!

    All C&C welcome!

Maybe this one should be in the Out of the Box forum, Dan? Just kiddin'.... An interesting moment captured, certainly... Good EXP and both birds look fairly sharp but I wish the angle were lower so we could see more of the birds' heads. Nice job reconstructing wing tip.

I like the high key effect here, great timing and Comp.

Thanks for the flowers but I find this image very interesting. High key and interaction make it for me and as Keith said, you did a good reconstruction job. Makes you wonder if the bird on the left got hit. Maybe a bit more sharpening?

Wingtip repair looks pretty good. Did you use feathers from the lower wing?

Yes I did Arthur. My first attempt at it. About the outer third of the wing was "replaced, along with various cloning, blurring to cover the join, etc.

Thanks Dan for the info. Did you use one or more Quick Masks?

No quick mask for the wing repair Arthur. I just outlined the lower third of the good wing with the Patch Tool. Did a vertical flip. Dragged it to the upper wing and overlapped so it looked like a fit. Then did a free rotate until it had the right angle. Lined everything up by nudging. Then did some clone tool work to re-create lines that crossed the join and eliminated the join line. I think I also did a bit of blurring and dodging and burning (had several tries at this and forget exactly which version had which exact actions) to make the light and textures look as natural as I could.

All good. Sometimes using the warp tool can help to avoid exact mirror imaging.

Great, thanks for the idea and feedback Arthur. I had looked through about 200 other images from the same shoot looking for a wing from another bird that was in a similar position. But to no avail. So went with the same bird, other wing. I have not used the warp tool so will check it out.

Right click once you have the transform box open on the selected area and then just pull on one of the handles a bit to change the shape. I use it a ton with Quick Masks. All from Robert O'Toole's APTATS I.
