    Welcome to BPN, James! Nice first post, I like the angle and alert pose. Dialing in positive EC would have helped with the exposure since the bird looks a bit dark as presented.

    Working against the light is not always the best option, and as Axel mentions, you can try and overexpose the bird at the expense of the BG to get more detail on it. IMO, the perch is a bit dominant.

    Welcome to BPN. Loved the pose. This is one my favorite subjects. Liked the composition too. Too many things were stacked against you here. perch angled towards the camera, harsh light from above, distracting BG elements that are brighter than the subject. Not an easy situation.

    James. I know how hard it can be to photograph these attractive birds. The ones I see are always so skittish. I like the pose of the bird. But, as others mentioned, many factors worked against you, especially the dark background line through the neck of the bird. But a great start on BPN!

    Nice pose, very difficult light, This is one of those 'why didnt I bring my flash' moments!
