Thank you Lance, these birds have very smooth feathers. I have yet to see actual fine feather detail on these guys! I did not apply much noise reduction at all, perhaps 10-15 on the noise slider in ligtroom.

Hi Charles, I think it's an interesting pose even though the subject is flying away. You managed pleasing light but agree about the smoothness. The image does appear sharp though and might be the angle of light.
Have photographed terns and seen many others images where much detail can be seen...
Thank you Dave. I will have to give them another try on another day. I just received this lens two days ago, so I am not used to it yet. This is one of the first images from the lens, so much more practice is in store.
Thanks Dave, I wholeheartedly agree about the practice. You can never have enough! The light was being diffused through a fog cloud, could that cause the details of the feathers to be blurred away? As you can see, the actual fringe (edges) are really sharp, but the fine stuff isn't there.
HI Charles Did you have to open up any in PS? Could be just a little under? Your lens should give excellent feather detail, those birds are tough on that department I try selecting the white and playing around with edge contrast, its hit an miss but worth trying !!!
Like the pose very much, elegant !!! Don't mind the going away in this case !!!
Thank Alfred, I had to bring up the image in PS by 0.6ev. Since I've shot these, I've been exposing a little bit to the right (by 0.7eV), and seem to be getting much better results. I will post a new shot in a few minutes.
