    Default Puffin bringing food

From Machias Island shooting from the blinds, puffin coming in with food for mate. Tough shooting form the blinds since they are cut low and you have to bend. Stationary birds is fine but any flight very tough. Neat place if you hit the right light !!

    Hi Alfred,

Great shot, and I speak from recent experience with what looks like the exact same light. When we were there on June 19, we did not see one Puffin carrying food. The explanation we were given was that as it was a very hot day and the Puffins were staying in the water during the day except for very early and very late. Not sure this was really the reason as there were plenty of birds on land and flying in and out, but perhaps there were not many hungry chicks to feed 5 weeks ago. An any case, you made a great image, and I get to see what we missed. TKS

Nicely done Al! Looks like a bill-full of krill (Meganictiphanes norwegicus- say that five times in a row!). I agree this would be a tough shot from the Machias Seal Island blinds. You had challenging lighting conditions which you delt with very well- it would have been easy to blow the whites on the shoulders.

Dick- if there are chicks you should see food being carried any time of day, regardless of the conditions. We use food carrying as an indication that egg hatching has commenced.

Welcome home Al....was waiting for you to post a Puffin. Awesome incoming shot and the mouth full of krill takes it over the top for me. Looks as if he was going to land on the end of your lense

Excellent work Al. Always a tough shot with a bird flying straight at you especially when its the speed and size of a puffin. The mouthful of krill really adds to this image.

    Cheers

Killer, esp. from those tiny windows. Shrimps? Love the light on the underwings and the direct flight. Lightening the sky a bit might be a good option.

Super image Al. Doing flight from a blind has got to be tough, but you've pulled it off quite well here.

Al, great approach shot, and you have captured some good underwing detail. Overall sharp, and the beak full of shrimps puts this over the top.

Love the head-on approach, not to mention the prey items:) Great sharpness and posture, agree with a slight lightening of the sky.
