Default Not-So-Dead Baby Galapagos Sea Lion

When we landed at Gardner Bay this little guy (or gal) looked lifeless and abandoned. Or so the group thought. I said, "Likely not." The mothers often leave the pups to go fishing sometimes for extended periods. Three hours later this baby Galapagos Sea Lion was frolicking on the warm beach.

Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens handheld at 185mm with the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 1000. Evaluative metering +1 2/3 stops: 1/320 sec. at f/6.3.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome. See the blog for tons of Galapagos journal entries and images.

Sweet capture Like seeing the open mouth and happy face .. good exposure, just enough detail in the shadow front leg Might have given more room to the left in direction the animal is looking ..not sure if stopping down would have gotten the whiskers shaper? !! Like the overall mood best .. sweet setting and bg !!!

I do not apply any kind of sharpening on master TIFF but once I convert it in JPEG for web posting , I apply USM at 0, 0.3, 70-90 % as required , Ouch this has to be my 9000th post here :)

    H-bhai,

    re:

    Nobody should.

but once I convert it in JPEG for web posting , I apply USM at 0, 0.3, 70-90 % as required.

My action applies more than that....

Ouch this has to be my 9000th post here :)

Why ouch? Has it been painful?

I use some capture sharpening as I import to LR, slight sharpening to the RAW image itself with PhotoKit Sharpener and the out put sharpener in a layer so only the needed part is affected. For the last go back and forth between PhotoKit and smart sharpen. For your large slide shows having an action is a necessity but for posting would sharpen one at a time?

Sharpening for print is totally different than sharpening for the web. There is a good section in ABP II On sharpening for print.

Thanks Al. My RAWs are sharpened a bit during conversion in ACR. That is my capture sharpening. What settings would you use for an 800 JPEG with smart sharpen. My action is set at 125/.3 right now and obviously that is not enough :)

No time to sharpen JPEGs individually :)

Artie I play it by ear and change for each image Since I also use some sharpening with PhotoKit on the RAW image my settings start out at 95/.2 but do vary a lot and only apply to needed part of image !!!

I agree that more space at the left would have been nice. A higher shutter speed would have been great. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all and Alfred. I have always used generic sharpening for JPEGs, been doing it that way for 15 years. We figured out the problem here: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...027#post546027 The new V-Bulletin is way-compressing images that are slightly larger than 200 kb, all the way down to 50 kbs or less. So my sharpening as I suspected has been right on :)

Thanks again all for your help.

Here is another strange thing that I forgot to mention. If I have a JPEG that came out of the action slightly larger than 200kb and I bring it back and use Save for Web/Optimize to File Size (<195 kb) it always does it perfectly. Do the same thing as a step in the action and it screws up about half the time--always with highly detailed files. Go figger.

Here is the proof of the pudding. It is the same image that I uploaded to Pane 1 with the same sharpening. The only difference is that I re-did Save for Web/Optimize <195 kb. :)

Yes Guruji , this problem had been figured out by Axel in one Avian thread , in my observation if we save at around 180kb , file uploaded on BPN server looks perfect , thanks for new USM settings info

Like the pose and the warm like. Also really like the sand on the seal as well.
