This Elegant Tern struck a nice pose as it headed home to the colony one evening during the workshop.

Doug:
An 'elegant' pose, like the framing of the head by the far wing. Nice display of near wing. Side lighting effective because head so well illuminated.
Might try a version with just a subtle bit of lightening of top of near wing and underside of far wing. I wouldn't want to lose the directional nature of the light, just pull out a bit more detail if possible.
Cheers
Randy
Beautiful pose and the vertical crop is outstanding for this image.
I've got zip on this species... Was this a VERT original? I like the near wing but am not a fan of the side light. Is anyone else seeing funkiness in the BKGR?

If I really scrutinize it, I see a bit of the purple splotches from jpeg compression. Is that what you were noticing?
Randy
Yes, I am seeing some serious splotchiness.

I know that my NEC monitor, which is wide gamut, even though it is set to sRGB emulation, tends to show these splotches more than my work monitor. I have stopped commenting on them usually.
Randy
I am working on a new laptop and only mentioned it because I am not seeing them in other images :) I wonder if Doug is seeing them either in the JPEG or in the optimized file.

Great pose and eye contact Doug! I am a fan of the lighting direction, illuminating the head, bill, eye and the leading edges of the wings. IMO it gives the image depth. I don't see any blotches in the bg here on my laptop.
I like the mood captured and nice eye contact. I am seeing some artifacts in the bg as well.
Doug, I love the light here. Lot of mood in the image. thx for sharing.
Excellent comp and angle of flight. Bird is sharp and well exposed. A super IMG !
The light is fabulous. Especially the way it rolls off with the curve of the near wing and catches the lower edge of the tail.
Good flight angle Doug, and would also be interested if this was captured as a vertical?

I do see blotches. It must be jpeg compression. My monitor is 2560x1600 so an 800 pixel tall jpeg is quite small on the screen. Not easy to see this artifacting.

Me bad. I was using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. It was wreaking havoc on the images. The Painted Bunting here: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...read.php?69033 appeared garishly over-saturated in Firefox and Kaustubh's Black-bellied Whistling Duck exhibited horrific artifacting when viewed there. I (accidentally) wound up viewing the images in Google Chrome and they all look great with no problems.
Kaustubh and Robert O'Toole offered tons of help and advice with Firefox to no avail :) No need to beat my head against the wall so I have made Google Chrome my default browser.
