The BG is concrete so I pushed it towards the blue end during pp.

I have to say: "Wow !!" as well. Never seen one that close. I wonder though if it's because of the dof or the mantis just looks like that up close, i.e., smooth and soft.

A striking view, Ken. I've always been fascinated by the way a mantis can turn its head to look at you - as this one is doing. The blue background works well as does the slight diagonal comp.

Okay, so how'd you get this close? This is really amazing, Ken! Is it a big crop? I'm kinda shocked that you got an image this big with the old 100mm. No extension tubes or anything? Wow...

I really like the colors in this image. I do think the front of his face could use a bit more sharpening although I do see the merits of it like this - it does give it a more alien feel. I think if this were mine I might try cloning out the OOF neck area. Lovely crop and composition as well.

It's cropped but not that big of one. She was a big bug..I'd say overall length was close to 6 inches so she had a big head.

    Hey Ken,
Love the in your face look and sharp where it needs it. Did you up the blues overall? I ask because ours are more green or brownish even. Very cool pose and comp!

These are one of my favorite subjects to find in the grassland prairie I shoot in every week. Most of the ones I find are 2 or 3 inches in length, but still have that mantis attitude (bad). It's amazing they can change their colors to match their habitat. This image has incredible detail and a pleasure to see.

Yes, I did. Even so, this one was a mix of colors. The wings were green, the body was brown with green racing stripes and the head was brown with a hint of blue covering the eyes.
