Default Adventure begins off to the puffin island

We are heading out to the puffin island for some blind time & close up birds, weather seems perfect but you can never be sure ... and things at the island were not going well Most cancelled trips have to do with fog (this was close) or heavy weather (not here).

We did get to the island but there was a swell making landing dangerous/impossible. So we stayed around in the little boat taking turns at the birds flying by. Frustrating since it is a two hour ride to the island ... and two hours back !!! We did and the first day out so it is a 50 % average Will post one from the landing so you can get a feel for what I'm talking about !!!

Image made with Canon G10 on the way out holing camera out the side and guessing at the framing !! For these shooting into a strong light camera does well and normally you don't need an exposure bias.

    Comments welcome and much appreciated

Too bad that you could not land but then, it's fun to watch the birds dive and fly by, too.

Hey Al, at least the water looks calm. I like the angle here.

Stuart the strong point of those little cameras is shooting by feel, just hold it out there and fire. Took four and this was the second, easy to get used to this type shooting !!!

Know what you mean about the island, never can tell. when I went out i there were swells on the way but the island was calm. Just did a trip to the Isle of Shoals left in sunlight and had fog the rest of the trip hard to focus on a white tern in the fog :D

Was at Seal Machias Island 2 weeks ago and experienced the same problem. We had fog and 5 foot seas, no landing in 3 days. Now I am determined to get on that island!

You must have been the week before I went, I was told they could not land !!! If the fog doesn't get you the swells from the wrong direction will ... but its worth it once you get on the island.

    Hey Alfred,
Know the view well! Too bad you didn't make it on.....it is quite the experience!!! I've used to go out with Barna and John for about 12 years.....glad to see his daughter has now grabbed the helm and does the tour!

I use to go out with Barna and John about 20 years ago. when I went on the Brookline Bird Club trip over the Fourth, they used the Captain out of Cutler. Much shorter trip, It is easier getting on the island now than it used to be no slippery rocks and broken rails

Hi Myer the trip out of Cutler is shorter and will try next time, I think they alternate days on the island?

Hi Roman will post a pic tonight to show the landing, they day we made it was no easy matter. With my boat all went well but the second came close to swamping. I've been told some people have gotten hurt landing and can see why .. .which I could come in with the supply chopper

No they both can go the same day but at different times one is suppose to be morning the the other after that we both ended up on the island at almost the same time, but we were first but only had an hour in the blind
