Default Galapagos 2010 #3: For James Salywoda

    Attached Images Attached Images

This image, a small crop from a vertical original (thanks to Robert O'Toole for the inspiration and lessons there), was created with the handheld Canon 400mm f/4 IS DO lens and the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 2/3 stops off the white sky: 1/1250 sec. at f/6.3 set manually to avoid having to make impossible exposure compensations on the fly :)

    Central sensor AI Servo AF.

Yeah, I wish that the bird had grown in all its rectrices :)

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Don't mind at all. Your repost is fine as is the original post :) Small differences like those above are matters of personal taste and monitor angles and calibrations.... At least with digital we have easy options :)

    Thank you bhai.

    Hi Artie,-
I think this is stunning. The banking pose is perfect in displaying the markings and details of the dorsal view. The darker out-of-focus background really makes the bird standout. Thanks for sharing.

Love the great topside detail and the incredible orange eye ring. I'm hoping to see this bird in person someday. Funny that you should dedicate this to Jim Salywoda, because at the Bolsa workshop he and I had a discussion about going vertical for flight. I spent a little while doing it; maybe I'll post a vertical of my own today.

Artie, pin sharp, great banking angle, and just love the exposure. Great contrast between the bird and the darker BG. Well captured.

Here's the tip: if the birds are banking and they are too big in the frame at just the right moment simply turn the camera on end. It takes a bit of practice and getting used to but it is do-able.

The 2011 two week trip had been sold out for quite a while. If anyone is seriously interested in one or two spots for the 2012 trip (in the planning stages right now), please get in touch via e-mail. A two week trip will get you to all the great spots with just a bit of time to rest in between. Whatever you do it is recommended that photographers visit only with a photography trip. Mine simply has the best guide, the best itinerary, and seven cruises of experience :)

Thanks a ton James. This is just another case of the old dog hunting. Lest there is any confusion I rate you and Doug Brown and Robert O'Toole and James Shadle and Jim Neiger and Jim Zipp (in North America at least) all as being 1,0000 times better than me at capturing great images of flight and action. I do try however, and as here, sometimes I get lucky. Hand eye coordination and even balance, which affects flight photography, all deteriorate with age. I was just 64. And I was not that good at flight when I was younger!@

ps: Sorry if I left anyone off the list.....

I may be decent with action, but you've got me by a wide margin on the other 95%! :)
