Well I got lucky this weekend at the mangrove in Sarasota b/c the Spoonbill appeared. Her nest is deep inside the mangrove, and she popped out near the top just before sunset.
Canon 30D, 300mm F4L & 1.4TC, F5.6, 1/1000sec, Gitzo & M2.3 head, I didn't realize how strong the sun was so late in the afternoon, so I had to do some exposure adjustment in PS. I like the intricate detail of this bird's bill and the soft feathersl. I wish for a more blurred BG, but I guess we can't have it all all of the time.
I really like the patterns visible on the bill. Another round of USM would really define these, and the eyes nicely. Good job in controlling the harsh light. Unfortunately the bill's shadow is cast in just about the worst place for this image.

Agree with Daniel !!!! Also for this portraits to work the best, a clean bg is usually necessary It focuses the attention on the bird's face without competing !!!!
Great details in those neck feathers! :) Lovely bill and I think the eye contact is good, as well as necessary. I wonder what the black specks are in the right hand corner (top). Looks like cloning?
